ABOUT HILLARY GORE

My work illustrates the struggle for self-definition in a culture that glorifies impossibly idealistic standards and narrow definitions for broad groups. In that context, much of my work touches on the inherent contradictions and limitations of societal expectations and the realities of human animal nature. I investigate the savagery lying just beneath the façade civilized culture as well as the resentment and frustrations that accompany that confinement and restraint. As I work, I tend to meditate on words like, aggressive, strong, intense, characteristics not normally accepted in our culture, but never the less, natural human tendencies.
