ABOUT JAYNIE CRIMMINS

It started with the recession, shredded paper, images of crop circles, and then things with barnacles. Bird’s eye views and close to microscopic examination. Densely populated surfaces and transparent elements. Human/alien made and naturally occurring. Strength and fragility. Private and public. Art and craft.

Tension, repetition and contrast dominate.

My work is driven by materials and process, compelling me to create intuitively. I obsessively position, thread, roll and dip these fragments of paper into beeswax. Somehow this fulfills a personal compulsion - blurring distinctions between art, craft and madness.

The combination of paper and beeswax permits me to juxtapose dense surface texture and transparency/geometric and organic forms. The beeswax immortalizes and gives structure to these fragile and amorphous materials.

By reclaiming and recycling paper that began it’s life as my financial statements, solicitations or commercial catalogues, I can construct new meaning by making the private public and the public private.
