ABOUT JOHN PAUL

With my paintings I like to experiment with color and texture. Instead of having a finished product in mind, or even an emotion or mood that I want to put to the canvas, I keep my mind open and let the moment and the evolving, erotic blend of the elements determine the direction of each piece. With each added layer of color and texture, the canvas took on it's own personality and mood.

I want each piece I create to encourage the viewer to study each part of the canvas, and the canvas as a whole. In my works I want the viewers to see and feel for themselves, and not really try to find any images or meaning that they believe were my doing. Almost none of this series was planned out in advance, or even in the process.

Art is personal. Art should provoke memories, feelings and emotions from within and not necessarily display what the artist was thinking or feeling, or aiming to produce. If a viewer can be touched by my work and feel a connection to their own inner-self then I know they truly connected to the piece. Then, and only then do I believe that they understand the piece.
