ABOUT KAREN CLEVELAND

This series of figurative work reflects the complex psychological and physical relationships that humans have with their surroundings. I intend for the work to articulate how inner thoughts, beliefs and patterns directly shape physical experiences and perceptions of the outer world, as well as how the mere division “inner” and “outer” is a construction of the ego.

The figure is made up of thickly layered paint to emulate the multiple layers of the psyche, which directly affects the individual’s relationship with the landscape.
